A loaded question. My normal answer is “it depends”…But here are some ideas…

There’s an ongoing debate with property Buyers in Texas about which county gives one the best property tax relief. Since I only sell in Collin-Grayson-Fannin-Hunt mostly, I will stick with those counties to highlight.

Property taxes are collected at different levels; County, City, ISD, and sometimes Special Districts such as Collin College, Trinity Valley College, and Grayson Jr College.

In my uncovering of the most recent rates of 2019, I have ignored adding any types of exemptions such as Homestead, Veterans, Senior, to make it all more transparent.

Here’s the first graphic that delineates the Highest and Lowest Tax rate cities in each county:

This shows the Highest Tax rate cities in each county, and what a property taxable value of $250,000 might cost in 2019 values.

This shows the Lowest Tax rate cities in each county, and what a property taxable value of $250,000 might cost in 2019 values.

This is a summary of the above information. Note the ‘Difference’ column which shows the often slight difference in the tax assessment between the highest and lowest City rates. Surprising, right?

I think alot of folks will be surprised by these numbers, as it would seem that Collin County especially would tend to be very expensive. The fact that Plano came in as the lowest in Collin I’m guessing you wouldn’t have expected? And also that there is only $1,100 worth of difference between highest and lowest.

I hope this helps shed a bit of light on the argument. If you’d like to see all of the numbers I dug up on many of the cities in each county, shoot me an email and I’ll forard you a copy. As far as taxes go, it’s really pretty fascinating! (ok, so that’s a stretch, but it’s all good to know!).
